2008 Chicago Big-Board Tourney
The 2008 Chicago Big-Board Tourney will be held on the weekend
of
July 19th &
20th 2008 (Saturday & Sunday)
Dear Checker friends:
Thanks to a generous donation from Donell Guy, we are pleased to announce the
Chicago Big-Board Tourney on the weekend of July 19-20, right after the National
Pool Checkers Tourney. The prize fund will be guaranteed at least $600.
This tournament will not award titles, and no organization membership is
required. Don and I agree that we need more opportunities to play the wonderful
game of 100-square checkers.
Please reply and give me a clue whether you might be interested in attending
on Saturday and Sunday, July 19-20, 2008. Space may be limited, so we would
like to get some idea of how many will attend.
BTW - Panama Williams and Charles Thompson will
be there.
Best regards,
Roger Blaine, PO Box 353, Osceola, IN 45561

Charles "Pecan" Thompson, Carol
Stream, Illinois, won the Chicago Big-Board Checkers tournament on Saturday,
July 19, 2008, with a perfect 10 points in 5 games. He defeated his fellow
Chicago master, Orlando "Panama" Williams, in the climactic last round.
Williams had been nicked for a draw by Neil Wenberg in an earlier games, so he
needed a win, not a draw, to stop Thompson. But it was not to be, and Williams
placed second with 7.
The 6-player tourney was held in the Holiday
Inn-Countryside/Lagrange, near Chicago, after the end of the National Pool
Checkers Tournament. Dr. Don Guy, New Castle, Delaware, guaranteed a $600 prize
fund, and Roger Blaine was the tournament director.
CROSSTABLE
A pleasant surprise was the appearance of Ramon Dionisio, of nearby
Darien, Ill., who is one of the strong young players of straight checkers.
Dionisio had just learned the 100-square game two months ago, playing on the
Internet, and did well against the older experienced players! Dionisio,
Wenberg, and Guy tied for third with 4 points each.
